Aluminium Fire-Rated Doors in the UAE: EI Ratings Explained

An EI rating tells you how long an aluminium fire-rated door holds back a fire and how much heat it stops passing through. The letters come from the European classification standard EN 13501-2: E is integrity — the assembly keeps flame and hot gases on the fire side; I is insulation — the unexposed face stays cool enough that people can pass it and nothing on the far side ignites. The number is the performance period in minutes, so an EI 60 door delivers both criteria for 60 minutes. On UAE projects the common classes are EI 30, EI 60, EI 90 and EI 120.

That distinction matters. A door can be rated for 60 minutes and still radiate enough heat to make an escape corridor unusable — because it was classified E or EW, not EI. This guide covers what each classification certifies, how the test works, which aluminium systems reach which class, and what Dubai Civil Defence expects on file.

What does EI mean on an aluminium fire-rated door?

Under EN 13501-2, elements are classified by the criteria they satisfy, each followed by a period in minutes. Three classifications cover almost all door and screen work:

The consequence is straightforward: behind an EI-classified assembly a person can stand next to the door during a fire; behind an E-classified one they may not. That is why compartment walls, stairwell enclosures and escape routes are normally specified EI — and why substituting an E-rated product changes the fire strategy rather than swapping like for like.

Periods come from a fixed set — 15, 20, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 minutes — so a door is EI 60, never “about an hour”.

How is an EI rating actually tested?

The rating is earned in a furnace, not calculated. For doors the test method is EN 1634-1; EN 13501-2 is the classification standard that turns the result into the EI 30 / EI 60 / EI 90 label. A complete specimen is built as it would be installed and exposed to the standard time–temperature curve, instrumented on the unexposed face.

Integrity fails at the first of three events: sustained flaming on the unexposed side, ignition of a cotton pad held against the face, or a gap admitting the test gauges — a 25 mm probe or a 6 mm × 150 mm gauge. Insulation fails when the unexposed face records a mean rise above 140 °C, or any single thermocouple exceeds 180 °C. The declared class is the last completed period before the first failure.

Two consequences follow. The rating belongs to the tested assembly — leaf, frame, glazing, gaskets, seals and ironmongery together — not the door leaf alone. And a non-rated aluminium door cannot be upgraded on site with intumescent strips: there is no test behind that assembly, so nothing to certify.

Which aluminium systems reach which EI class?

Aluminium is demanding to fire-rate — it conducts heat readily and softens well below steel’s threshold — which is why the rating must come from a tested system, not a fabricator’s detail. The performance is engineered into the profile: fire-protective inserts (GKF or CI board) inside the chambers, intumescent seals at every junction, and steel reinforcement at the cores on heavier classes.

MB-78EI is the system we recommend first on most projects. Its sections are 78 mm deep with a 34 mm polyamide thermal break, and Aluprof publishes a frame U-value (Uf) from 1.60 W/m²K. Our assembly data also lists acoustic performance to Rw 41 dB, smoke-tightness classes S200 and Sa, and self-closing class C5, with test reports from IFT Rosenheim, ITB and ATG naming the system by code and class.

Where the requirement climbs to EI 120, MB-78EI is out of scope: most aluminium door-only systems stop at EI 90, and the two-hour class needs the deeper, steel-reinforced MB-118EI architecture. Establishing that threshold early avoids a late redesign.

What does Dubai Civil Defence expect on file?

The regulatory anchor is the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice, issued by Civil Defence. The 2018 edition remains the widely referenced version, and emirate-level amendments continue against it — Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority released 54 local amendments to that edition on 12 March 2026, several touching compartmentation. The required class for a given opening comes from the approved fire strategy, so confirm the applicable edition and local amendments with the authority having jurisdiction before the specification is frozen.

Product approval is a separate step from design compliance, and it is where programmes most often slip. Fire-rated products for Dubai projects are assessed through the Emirates Safety Laboratory (ESL), the Dubai Civil Defence testing and certification facility, which operates to ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO/IEC 17065 and tests to the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code alongside EN and BS. ESL issues the Certificate of Conformity used for Civil Defence product registration — and without it, authorities will not issue construction approvals.

For an aluminium fire-rated door package that means:

An assembly whose test report does not extend to the size, configuration or hardware installed is, for approval purposes, uncertified. Checking the field of application against the door schedule at tender stage costs an hour; finding the gap at inspection costs the programme.

Does a fire rating cost you thermal performance?

Not inherently. The fire-protective inserts sit inside the profile chambers; the polyamide thermal break sits between the inner and outer aluminium shells — separate engineering, separate jobs. That is why MB-78EI carries a 34 mm thermal break and a Uf from 1.60 W/m²K while classified EI 15 to EI 90. It matters most when a rated door sits in the envelope, as we set out in whether aluminium fire-rated doors sacrifice thermal performance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between EI 30 and EI 60?

The number is the classification period in minutes. An EI 30 assembly satisfies both the integrity and insulation criteria for 30 minutes under the standard furnace test; EI 60 does so for 60 minutes. The longer period needs a heavier profile, more substantial inserts and a matching fire-rated glass build-up — a different tested assembly, not the same door held longer.

Can aluminium doors be fire-rated?

Yes. Aluminium fire-rated doors are classified to EN 13501-2 like steel or timber assemblies, using profiles engineered with fire-protective inserts and intumescent seals. Aluprof’s MB-78EI is classified EI 15 to EI 90 and MB-118EI reaches EI 120, with slim sightlines and a thermal break in the same section.

Is an EI rating the same as a fire rating in hours?

They describe the same idea in different systems. EI classes are declared in minutes under EN 13501-2, while North American practice describes doors in hours. They are not interchangeable on paper: each comes from a different test method, so a submittal should use the standard the approving authority accepts.

Does the EI rating apply to the door leaf or the whole assembly?

The whole assembly. EN 1634-1 tests the leaf, frame, glazing, gaskets, seals and ironmongery as one specimen, and the classification is granted to that configuration. Changing hardware, glass build-up or size beyond the tested field of application puts it outside its certification.

Can a standard aluminium door be upgraded to fire-rated on site?

No. Fire resistance is a property of a tested system, and adding intumescent strips to a non-rated door produces an assembly that was never tested and cannot be certified. Where a rated opening is discovered late, replace it with a tested system sized to the opening.

What certification do fire-rated doors need for a Dubai project?

Test evidence to EN 1634-1 classified under EN 13501-2, third-party certification naming the system and class, and a Certificate of Conformity supporting Civil Defence product registration — issued in Dubai through the Emirates Safety Laboratory. Requirements vary by emirate, so confirm with the authority having jurisdiction.

Specify the class, then specify the system

Fire-rated aluminium is one of the few areas of a glazing package that is genuinely binary: the assembly is certified for the class and configuration installed, or it is not. Getting there is a matter of sequence — establish the EI class from the fire strategy, choose a system whose tested range covers it with room at the top, confirm the field of application covers the schedule, and keep the certification chain intact to the Certificate of Conformity.
